Railo 3.1 - it will be next year

December 7, 2008 · By Gert Franz · 45 Comments

Lately many people asked us about Railo 3.1 and the release date for it. We announced back in June that it will be November or so. We never thought there would be so huge positive reactions from the community. Because of that and because you can never make a first impression twice, we have postponed our release date for Railo 3.1.We have made several improvements in the last 5 months in order to close the gap to CF8 and the anticipated CF9. Not only closing the gap but also dealing with several new customers and projects set us a little back on our track. Nevertheless we are hard working on the 3.1 alpha release. It will contain the basic structure of the 3.1 open source release with the extension manager that will allow you to upgrade your Railo version as desired. At the moment we are separating everything into core or non core (I feel like I am a member of the CFML advisory committee :-) ). The core will be open source and free and will be quite similar to the Community version of Railo 3.0. In addition you will be able to download and install several extensions in order to enhance your Railo installation. One thing I can already say is that there will be an Enterprise Package which contains all the non free extensions for the price of 1,999 US$.
The Enterprise Bundle on the other hand will contain a certain version of Fusion Reactor and Fusion Debug (Fusion Analytics will at first not be a part of it) for the price of 2,999 US$.
All extensions can be downloaded and installed separately. You will be able to buy extension packages as well like the "Clustering Package" or the "Multimedia package". The Railo 3.1 OS version will contain BlazeDS which will be experimentally available in Railo 3.0.2 as well. In addition there will be the new database resource which will allow you to use a database as a virtual file system. Some additional configuration options will be available in the Administrators of Railo 3.1.
We are very confident that Railo 3.1 will be a huge success and that with the help of JBoss we will bring CFML to the attention it deserves.

    Pretty excited about the Railo + BlazeDS, that would be pretty huge to close the gap with Adobe ColdFusion 8 (for those of us who know nothing about server and adding stuff to it, and dont want to know hehe)

    Thanks for the update guys,

    Certainly exciting times for the CFML World!
  • 3 Tim Price // Dec 7, 2008 at 10:10 PM

    Wow, it sounds like you guys are really hard at work. It's a very exciting time for CFML indeed. Do you have a new date when will 3.1 be released?

    "Railo 3.1 OS version will contain BlazeDS which will be experimentally available in Railo 3.0.2"
    You guys rock :-)
    I've basically stopped dev. at non-work while I wait for this (there's no point writing the OpenAMF-based workarounds only to throw them away) so am really looking forward to it.
    It's also the one of the main features that would stop us being able to look at Railo OS at work.

    Like Tim says though, could you posit an updated time frame ?
  • 5 Chris // Dec 8, 2008 at 11:47 AM

    Any news on when 3.0.2 will be available?

    Maybe you want to reconsider the package naming... Enterprise Package vs. Enterprise Bundle may confuse people. ;-)
  • 6 John Farrar // Dec 8, 2008 at 1:52 PM

    Do you have a list of expected feature upgrades for 3.1?
  • 7 tony petruzzi // Dec 8, 2008 at 2:58 PM

    just please make cfdocument part of the open source railo package. i personally think the biggest problem with open bluedragon's launch was that they didn't have cfdocument support or an administrative backend. the lack of these two features made the product impossible for me to switch to.
  • 8 Streit Michael // Dec 8, 2008 at 4:41 PM

    cfdocument will be part of the OS Version and is ALREADY part of the FREE community version with no restriction!
  • 9 Michael Streit // Dec 8, 2008 at 4:56 PM

    we will make a detailed list with all features with the first public release.
    but the importent steps are:
    - opensouring the code (remove all restricted libs and reorganize the code)
    - add support for blazeDS (AMF3)
    - Extension Manager and more interfaces to extend/customize Railo (like dynamicly loading tag/function libraries and jars)
    - support for cfc based customtag
    ...
  • 10 Michael Streit // Dec 8, 2008 at 4:58 PM

    i have forget the support for Integral Debug interface
  • 11 Tom Chiverton // Dec 9, 2008 at 12:07 PM

    Debug interface ?
    You mean Railo is compatible with Adobe's CF debugging extensions for Eclipse ?
  • 12 Gert Franz // Dec 9, 2008 at 2:04 PM

    Not quite. It will be with Fusion Debug from Intergral. They will release the debugger for Railo with our 3.1 OS release.

    @Streit

    you guys are awesome!
  • 14 tony petruzzi // Dec 9, 2008 at 4:41 PM

    one other question. are there going to be any plans of attacking the performance implications of object creation within the CFML language in general?
  • 15 Chris // Dec 12, 2008 at 4:37 PM

    Any idea what the Educational Price will be for Enterprise?
  • 16 Gert Franz // Dec 12, 2008 at 5:50 PM

    @tony
    have you tested it with Railo? At least Colbox is much faster because of the better CFC creation.

    @Chris
    Like usual, educational discount will be 50%

    is there a download for a 3.1 beta or alpha somewhere? I've been thinking of working on packaging it for gentoo.
  • 18 Gert Franz // Dec 19, 2008 at 1:46 PM

    Not yet, there will be one quite soon. I'll let you all know.

  • 19 David Henry // Dec 24, 2008 at 6:53 PM

    YAY for BETA!
  • 20 Guennadi M // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:52 AM

    Will cfvideo tag be available with the free release? Thanks.
  • 21 Gert Franz // Jan 7, 2009 at 9:45 AM

    @Guennadi

    CFVideoplayer* will be a part of it. CFVIDEO on the other hand will be available as an extension for around 50US$.

    Not to be a pain... Prolly too late for that ;) but.... When Gert, when?
  • 23 Doug // Jan 25, 2009 at 12:27 AM

    Gert and Michael,

    My main comment is that for Railo to be successful you need to follow the lead of Luis Majano (at Coldbox) and have some good documentation. Especially important, I think, is to have a Getting Started doc for Linux, Windows, etc., that will explain and show "how to" get Railo up and running. Such simple things as getting Railo mappings to recognize files in a default IIS directory (c:/inetpub/wwwroot) would be much appreciated.

    I know my boss briefly tried Railo on his WinXP laptop and when it didn't immediately recognize the root shown above he was ready to ditch it. He didn't want to move his files to the railo default dir and couldn't figure out how to set up another mapping. This all because there is no documentation with the download or anywhere on the site.

    So, please, please get some documentation together for the sake of the Railo project.

    I've been a Coldfusion developer in the past but latter changed to PHP but i'm growing tired of it and these latest announcement around CF/Blaze etc made me again highly interested in CF.

    Is there anyway to some notification service for the beta program or something ?

    Hi all,

    thanks a lot for all your comments. We try to heed all your hints and tips. There is lot to come this year from Railo. We are planning the public beta for February. By end of March we target the release of RC 1 of Railo 3.1 Open Source. Thanks again...

    Awesome! Thanks for the update Gert :D
  • 27 Sana // Jan 28, 2009 at 11:32 AM

    @Gert Any chance of hibernate in public beta :)
  • 28 Gert Franz // Jan 28, 2009 at 12:13 PM

    @Sana,

    no, Hibernate will not be part of Railo 3.1 yet. But we're in the progress of involving it.

    Gert,
    Any updates on the ETA of Railo 3.1 beta?
    Thanks,
    David
  • 30 Gert Franz // Feb 24, 2009 at 5:00 PM

    MArch 31st it is. It had to be a month with 31 days, because of the 3.1 :-)

  • 31 Caleb Cushing ( xenoterracide ) // Feb 26, 2009 at 1:42 PM

    that for the beta? the full launch or what?
  • 32 Gert Franz // Feb 26, 2009 at 3:38 PM

    Well it will be the public 3.1 BETA release. The closed alpha runs quite well and we await massive feedback on the beta. The full release is planned about 6 weeks later.

  • 36 Chris // Mar 25, 2009 at 1:29 PM

    Will there be Installation guides (ie to Railo, Tomcat, IIS/Apache)? Or are we going to have to rely on this: http://www.railo.ch/blog/index.cfm/2009/2/16/Railo-Installation-guides. The reason I ask is because it has been a pain in the rear with IIS7. Got every thing working except for the default documents. It won't pick up index.cfm as a default, but if I add index.cfm to the url it works fine. (Tomcat/Railo/IIS7 on Windows 2008 32 bit).
  • 37 David Henry // Mar 25, 2009 at 1:37 PM

    What time on the 31st? :)
  • 38 Andrew Schwabe // Mar 26, 2009 at 4:35 PM

    All very exciting stuff :) I noticed that Railo 3.0.2 is available now, so did the "experimental" BlazeDS make it in? Any docs available on this ?
  • 39 Gert Franz // Mar 26, 2009 at 4:47 PM

    @David: Noon EST :-) That's the plan...

    @Andrew: Will be there on Monday as well...
  • 40 Shama Sukul // Mar 26, 2009 at 10:19 PM

    SInce 3.0.2 has an experimental version of BlazeDS, does it also support AMF3?
  • 41 Gert Franz // Mar 27, 2009 at 8:57 AM

    @shama yes it does. The blog entry about how to use it with Railo 3.1 will be out next week with the launch.
  • 42 Thomas // Mar 31, 2009 at 2:44 PM

    When/where today is 3.1 released?
  • 43 David McGuigan // Mar 31, 2009 at 6:08 PM

    Can we get an update? Was the date postponed?
  • 44 Gerald // Mar 31, 2009 at 6:37 PM

    It is 12:35 03/31/09?

    How 'bout some hot steamy OSS action?
  • 45 Gianna // Sep 8, 2009 at 1:35 PM
